I don't really have a retirement plan. To quote Warren Ellis, "Writers don't retire. They just die." I do, however, have an idea of how I want to live when I'm older and financially stable and give less of a fuck.

This idea has evolved over the years, but right now the plan is to have some land, some trees, a small house (pretty much just a bedroom, a kitchen, and a bathroom), and a separate building that serves as my workshop. Maybe some goats.

I thought about also having chickens, but then I looked into what chicken-keeping actually involves. For one, if you have chickens, you need many chickens. They're flock animals who panic if there aren't plenty of other chickens around. For another, if a chicken gets sick, it cannot be allowed to get the rest of the flock sick. Which means the sick chicken must be executed.

I don't have it in me to execute a chicken. I eat meat, but if I were ever responsible for killing my own food, I'd probably starve to death. I realize the hypocrisy and accept this about myself.

However, a few days ago I was talking to a coworker who does keep chickens. He lamented that all his chickens' eggs kept getting stolen by crows.

Which means, if I want fresh eggs, I don't need a flock of chickens. I need a flock of crows.

Covered roosts for the chickens to nest and lay eggs in.

Also, if they get sick, isolate and take to vet. I have friends who've raised chickens, and the initial set up is daunting, but they do pretty well.

Another idea is make friends with folks who have chickens, and trade something you grow for some of their yummy fresh eggs. with multiple chickens, folks usually have extras.

or yoo could raise crows. big cool factor there.
